This unit on story-telling requires me too come up with an idea for a 30 second scene. Too make the scene more believable and appealing I'm going to firstly choose my era, and then give a brief history of what the story is about.
Once I have a background story to work with I will think about how the scene will look and it's contents, as well as the characters and their traits.
My Genre - Futuristic
Story Background - My idea is about a 30 year old man from 1990 who has been found by a woman (55) in the year 3090. She discovered him when her shopping delivery was beamed through as usual to her home. He has no memory of how he came to be there, she see's that he's been branded with a certain company logo. She has always had issues with the company and she does like to complain!
Basically she try's to help the man find out how and why he is in the future.
The Characters -
Zebula she is a 55 year old woman. She is a widow and has no family that she knows off! She thinks of herself as a well respected woman, she's snobby, strict, argumentative and well motivated when it involves her being proved right.
George (30 year old from 1990) George is a single father of two. He is lighthearted, playful, kind, and an optimist. He is very curious and doesn't think too much before he acts, if he saw a sandwich under an acme anvil he wouldn't think twice!
My Scene - The scene I have decided to visualize is Zebula trying to make George look like he belongs in 3010. She has taken him shopping for various outfits, this shop in the future is different to any shop George has ever been in. After Zebula scans them in at reception she takes the Changing room controller and they both move on to my scene.
The scene is a changing room which contains a large floor to ceiling mirror which is interactive using the remote that Zebula has.
The Story (Script) :-
George and Zebula enter the room together.
Voice on tanoy "Please stand in the lit area and press start to begin shopping."
Zerbula
points and ushers George towards the marked area that has been lit, and walks over to her seat.
George
walks towards the beam of light whilst looking around curiously. He notices himself in the mirror points and leans back slightly, pleased and surprised.
A Beam of light from above moves across George scanning him and changing his outfit ready for him to try on the various outfits from the catalogue.
George
Jumps back he crouches slightly and looks up like "what the hell!"
Zebula
Rolls her eyes back with slight shake of the head then presses the menu button on the remote.
Then projected on the large mirror appears a number of options for different types of clothing.
The options are Male, Female, Robot or fancy dress.
Zebula chooses a category and an outfit. The outfit then appears on George
George
He looks amazed and moves about to see if the outfit stays on etc. He looks disgusted with the outfit.
Zebula
She chooses add to delivery ignoring George's opinion.
This clip will be followed by quick cuts of a various outfits and expressions of George posing in the outfits and generally mucking about. There's also clips of Zebula's unamused face slightly changing to a hint of a smile as she starts to lighten up to George's innocence and playfulness.
After the sequence of quick cuts we can see George being silly. Then Zebula suddenly bursts out with laughter and you can see the her facial expression change dramatically releiving the tension that she has built up for years.
Zebula and George then exit the changing room with their purchases.
Storyboard

To help me with my composition in my shots I modelled a rough version of how I wanted my scene too look and posed two rigged characters within the camera shot. The shot below shows them entering the room.

In this next shot I wanted to show how the lighting could look and an idea of the colour scheme I was aiming for.

Mood BoardI want my narrative to be in a childrens cartoon style like the jetsons. As it is based in the future I thought the jetsons was a good cartoon too look at, it helped me get an idea of how the interior could look.
I really wanted to make my narrative appealing by having colours that stand out against each other, e.g. red and white or black and white etc.
Character poses Below is a few examples of poses that could be used in the scene for each character.

Character Designs
Zebula:- Because I wanted Zebula to look old and grumpy, I started by drawing some detailed images so that I could pick up the key features like the bags under the eyes, the snobby nose, the lovely old persons hair style and of course the wrinkles. I then did a few sketches of how she could look in the cartoon style, and I have put the final design below.
George:- For Georges design he needed to look like he was from the 90's when he walked into the scene, so I decided to dress him in a smart cardigan with a shirt underneath, jeans and converse. for the finishing touch I have given him the classic hairstyle - curtains!
Production Still:- Here is how I feel the characters and the scene will look when created.
